Oregon Statewide Test Opt Out Form

2023-2024 STATEWIDE TESTING OPT-OUT

The 23/24 Opt-Out form will be available in November. To best support school district planning, you are encouraged to submit your form and/or exemption letters to your child’s school by March 15, 2024.

MATH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS STATE TESTS

Students in grades 3-8 and 11 take the Math and Language Arts Smarter Balanced tests in the spring. Most students participate in state testing, but parents have the right to opt their children out if they choose. The school shall provide any student who is exempted from a state test with supervised study time while other students are testing.

State law permits parents and adult students to annually opt out of Oregon’s statewide summative tests in English Language Arts and Math by submitting the form provided below.

SCIENCE AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENTS

Parents may not “opt out” of the Science or English Language Proficiency assessments. These assessments require an exemption. Exemptions allow parents to request that their student be exempt from testing based on disability or religion. Unlike the opt-out process for Math and English Language Arts, parent requests for exemption for all other tests must satisfy the following conditions:  Be submitted in writing to the district (there is no standardized form), include reasons for request (disability or religion), and propose an alternative learning activity for the student.  This exemption is subject to district review and determination of whether to approve.
