School Closure Information

Information for Families *Updated April 8th*

ASD Families:

Today, April 8, 2020, The Governor of Oregon formally announced that Oregon schools will remain closed for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year. Although this news is disappointing, the District has been planning for this possibility. Astoria School District will continue to provide remote learning opportunities with the following priorities:

  • To work to help students stay connected to their teacher and our school community.

  • To provide students with engaging and enriching opportunities to continue to think, learn, and grow.

  • To support parents and families with resources and support that allow them to support their students’ needs.

Over the last two weeks, school staff have been focused on student connection and family support. Teachers will continue to reach out for families on a weekly basis through the end of the school year.

The Astoria School District Board of Directors has adjusted the calendar for the remainder of the school year. A link to the adjusted school calendar is below.

Astoria School District staff are acutely aware of what this decision means to our students, and in particular, our graduating seniors. High School staff are committed to ensuring that seniors on track to receive their diploma, will do so. They are also committed to providing the needed assistance to seniors that have more work to complete in order to receive a diploma. District staff is working in partnership with High School staff in an effort to provide a safe and healthy way to celebrate and recognize the amazing work of Astoria High School Class of 2020.

We care about our students and families and will continue to serve our community throughout the school year. Our school district website homepage will be updated with current public health information links, remote learning links, food delivery information and family resources. Please visit our website at http://www.astoria.k12.or.us/ for more information.

This is a challenging time for our district families, students, teachers and staff, as well as our nation and the world. Over the last month, I have personally witnessed the heart, promise and resilience of our people, and I am confident that we will come out of this stronger than before. We are all in this together.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I am available by phone at 503-325-6441 or email at choppes@astoria.k12.or.us.
